Rooster in San Mateo County Tested Positive for Highly Contagious Poultry Disease
A rooster brought into a veterinary clinic in Redwood City tested positive for Virulent Newcastle disease, the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Animal health Division confirmed Thursday, March 14, 2019. Formerly known as exotic Newcastle disease, Virulent Newcastle disease does not pose a risk to human health. It is, however, highly contagious and a fatal disease for poultry, and is presently under eradication in Southern California after being found there last year. LEARN MORE

County of San Mateo Kicks Off Census Day 2020 Community Launch
County Manager Mike Callagy and the Board of Supervisors are joining local leaders from nonprofit, business, civic, local government, and community organizations to kickoff San Mateo County's Census Day 2020 countdown. Every 10 years, the federal government is required to count all people living in the United States through a national census. The County's Office of Community Affairs is spearheading this effort in San Mateo County and wants to hear from residents on how to engage all groups within the community to stand up and be counted. CalFresh Mobile Office Slated for Summer 2019 Rollout
The County Manager's Office and Board of Supervisors on March 21, 2019, were invited by the Human Services Agency to a behind-the-scenes tour of the new CalFresh Mobile Office. Slated for an official rollout early summer, this satellite generated mobile office outfitted with computers, WiFi and an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card printer, will travel throughout San Mateo County raising awareness about the CalFresh program and healthy eating, visiting schools and various community events, and helping people fill out CalFresh applications. Coroner's Office Seeks to Identify 35-Year Cold Case Homicide Victim
The San Mateo County Coroner's Office is partnering with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, DNA Doe Project and National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to use genealogy analysis and improved imaging techniques to identify a cold case homicide victim from 35 years ago. In addition, the Coroner’s Office continues to review potential missing person matches through the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. The decedent was the victim of a brutal homicide and his remains were found on Nov. 26, 1983, on lower Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. LEARN MORE
Department of Public Works Cleans Up Garbage Site in Unincorporated Area of Colma
The County's Department of Public Works (DPW) recently embarked on a big clean up project in an unincorporated area of Colma where a portion of a public right of way was being utilized as a garbage storage site and as living quarters for two homeless individuals. After Code Enforcement and DPW worked with the adjacent property owner to clean up garbage spilling over onto the public right of way, a Human Services Agency's team was brought in to help the homeless folks. DPW crews then graded and cleared the area of overgrown brush and remnant garbage. DPW serves the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County, providing public services and operating facilities.
