All 54 San Clemente High School Avid Students College Bound
54 1st generation college-bound AVID students at San Clemente High School earned over $8 million in scholarships. See where they're heading.

SAN CLEMENTE, CA — A total of 54 San Clemente High School seniors secured the help and pathway from their AVID teachers at Capistrano Unified School District's San Clemente High School this year. All of the students will be attending college in 2021/22, the district says.
This is the first time everyone in the graduating AVID classes will be moving on to college. And, with each student getting accepted to two or more universities, they have their pick on where to go for their next level of education.
The AVID program is for first-generation students whose parents are not familiar with the college application process, according to Capistrano Unified School District spokesperson Ryan Burris.

The AVID students account for 10 percent of the graduating class at San Clemente High, and all were accepted to at least two four-year colleges out of the program.
"That's a whopping 96.2 percent were accepted into three or more colleges," according to Ryan Burris, Capistrano Unified School District spokesperson.

Collectively these students have been offered $8.35 million in scholarships, according to San Clemente High School AVID teacher and coordinator Erin Dollar.
"Many of them never thought college was an option for them," Dollar says. "
At San Clemente High School, the AVID s program is unique. The entire class — including the teacher — has stayed together for the entire four years of high school.
"The students apply as eighth-graders to become one of 60-70 students in two classes per grade accepted into the program," Burris said. "The program chooses students who are driven, self-motivated, and will embrace the opportunities they gain in AVID."
San Clemente High School’s AVID teachers have intimate knowledge of what it takes to get accepted into a four-year university, what steps to take along the way, and how to earn scholarships to help with the cost of a college education.
The students take an AVID class each year along with their regular high school curriculum.
Nearly all Capistrano Unified high schools, many middle schools, and even some elementary schools have AVID programs.
"These committed students embrace the opportunities for leadership, community and school involvement, college field trips, mentoring, and more," Burris says. "Through AVID, they hone studying and test-taking skills, learn about the entire college system from Cal State universities to Ivy League schools, practice writing college entrance essays and more."
