They weren’t just fellow soccer players or Capistrano Valley High School students or friends and family.

They were all of South Orange County, coming together to mourn the loss of five lives cut far too short.

Body-wrenching sobs came from all corners of a packed quad near Capo’s gym. About 4,000 people, wearing soccer jerseys and school spirit wear and homemade T-shirts of love and support, squeezed close and hugged each other.

Five lives gone, but not forgotten.

Brandon Moreno, an eighth grader at Carl Hankey Middle School.

Alejandro (Alex) Sotelo, 14, a freshman at Capo Valley and resident of San Juan Capistrano.

Mathew Melo, 15, a freshman at Capo Valley and resident of Mission Viejo.

Jenny Campos, age unknown, a freshman at Laguna Hills High School and resident of Aliso Viejo.

Jenny Bahena, age unknown, a freshman at Laguna Hills High. Both girls played on the school’s water polo team.

And one survivor, Bradley Morales, of Laguna Niguel.

“My heart is heavy,” said CVHS Principal Kevin Astor. “But it fills my soul to know that we come together in the face of adversity.”

Then one by one, coaches, pastors, friends, sisters and cousins came to the microphone to share their grief.

“We’re altogether. We’re going to get through this. I have no words,” said one girl.

Family spoke too. A cousin of Jenny Bahena spoke in Spanish, recalling how special, beautiful and sweet she was.

Voy a extrañarte.” I’m going to miss you.

AYSO coach Jake Jones said the world is a little less bright without Melo and Sotelo.

“We don’t know when our time will come. It’s very important that we spend our time well,” he said.

“I love you so much Mathew,” said Joshua Aguilar. “I know you can hear me.”
