6/18/2021…San Clemente, California… On Sunday, July 4, 2021, the City of San Clemente will host its annual Independence Day celebration with a spectacular fireworks display for the community at 9 p.m. from the Municipal Pier. To help facilitate a safe and memorable July 4th celebration, the City would like to remind visitors and residents of policies and regulations regarding the use of public space during this exciting holiday event.
Continuing an annual tradition, beachgoers can enjoy a flyover by the Condor Squadron, consisting of four AT-6 aircraft World War II trainers along participating coastal cities. The flyover will begin in Huntington Beach and conclude in San Clemente where it will flyover the coast and conduct a 360 in the air. The full flyover schedule is as follows:
- Huntington Beach, 5:25 to 5:30 p.m.
- Newport Beach, 5:35 to 5:40 p.m.
- Laguna Beach, 5:45 to 5:50 p.m.
- Dana Point, 5:50 to 5:55 p.m.
- San Clemente, 5:55 to 6:00 p.m.
The end of the pier will close at noon on Saturday, July 3rd for preliminary preparation and the entire pier will close on Sunday, July 4th at 7:30 a.m. and remain closed for the entire day. The municipal beach and pier will be closed to the public after the fireworks display until the morning of Monday, July 5th. The Fisherman’s Restaurant will be accessible to its patrons with extended outdoor dining and service.
On Sunday, July 4th, all ocean access, including swimming, surfing, and wading, will be closed 1,000 feet in both directions from the pier from 8 to 10 p.m. The purpose is to protect people from the dangers of fireworks fallout as per Orange County Fire Authority regulations. The show risks delay or cancellation if the public does not comply with the closure.
Overnight camping on the beach and at Parque Del Mar is prohibited. The San Clemente Municipal Code (SCMC) prohibits overnight camping in parks and on the beach; accessing the beach between the hours of midnight and 4:00 a.m. is also prohibited. Those in violation of the ordinance are subject to citation and may be asked to remove all belongings. Roping or blocking off portions of the beach or blocking public access for private use is not permitted. The City assumes no responsibility for unattended property left on the beach.
Beach users are reminded that smoking and the consumption of alcohol are prohibited on all City beaches and park sites. Members of the public are also reminded that SCMC states that no person shall take off, land, or operate an unmanned aircraft or “drone” over any City-permitted events open to the public unless granted written or electronic permission by the City. Also, please be advised that dogs are not permitted on the coastal beach trail on July 4th. Those in violation of this ordinance may be cited accordingly.
To assist with downtown parking, the San Clemente Trolley will be in service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There will be no holiday modifications to this year’s trolley route. Stay updated on changes to the hours of operation by visiting www.san-clemente.org/trolley.
For pedestrian safety and to avoid major traffic delays, San Clemente Police Services will be restricting vehicular traffic off of the southbound I-5 Avenida Palizada exit, diverting it eastbound between approximately 7-10:30 p.m. To maintain a safe emergency vehicle access path to the Pier Bowl, the 200-300 blocks of Avenida Victoria will be closed to vehicle access from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Crossing guards will be located at the crosswalks of Avenida Del Mar and North Calle Seville; and Avenida Del Mar and Alameda Lane. After the fireworks show finishes, pedestrians should take caution, especially with the increased crowds, to stay clear of the train tracks. Although intersections/streets will not be closed, please expect all Pier Bowl streets to be impacted and drivers should take extra precautions when leaving the downtown area.
When leaving the beach, people should remove all trash and belongings and place in the appropriate receptacle. Any trash and litter remaining on the beach will end up polluting the ocean. Also, the City of San Clemente has ordinances prohibiting any fireworks, including Safe & Sane fireworks within City limits, and ordinances prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach and pier. San Clemente Police Services will strictly enforce these ordinances.
Additionally, please be advised that all City facilities will be closed on Monday, July 5th in observance of the July 4th holiday. This closure includes City Hall, the Community Center, and the Ole Hanson Beach Club. The San Clemente Aquatics Center will be open for public lap swim with modified holiday hours.
