Heal the Bay assigns grades based on water quality data collected between April and October 2019, the time of year when more people visit beaches for recreational activities. Of the 12 listed San Clemente beach segments, nine received an A grade and one received a B grade. Both the Municipal Pier (Pier) and Poche Beach received improved grades; neither were listed on the Beach Bummer List.

Improvements at the Pier can be attributed to the Pier Bacteria Study (Study) and installation of Bird Deterrent Netting under the Pier. The Study’s Stakeholder Advisory Committee, the City’s Coastal Advisory Committee, and City staff have been instrumental in water quality improvements.

Irrigation runoff is a carrier of pollutants such as bacteria, pesticides and fertilizer. Residents and businesses should watch their irrigation system run through its entire watering cycle, adjust any misaligned sprinkler heads that are spraying onto

hard surfaces, and reduce watering times if water is seen running into the curb and gutter. A sampling watering schedule, including recommended cycle-and-soak irrigation practices, can be found on the City’s Water Conservation webpage at
http://www.san-clemente.org/waterconservation. This will prevent the transport of pollutants and save precious water resources.

Source investigations in the Pier Bowl and Prima Deshecha Cañada watersheds are on-going. Citizens can help protect ocean water quality by reporting any water running down the street when it is not raining, or any illegal dumping into storm drains by calling the Pollution Reporting Hotline at (949) 366-1553.
