San Clemente Surfers Win Big at National Scholastic Surfing Association Competition

Surf City was in full swing with the National Scholastic Surfing Association's National Championships at the Huntington Beach Pier in 2016.

Huntington Beach, CA--National Scholastic Surfing Association breeds champions at the holiday weekend championship in Huntington Beach.

With waves ranging from 3-foot to 5-foot range, the entrants were able to put on a show for the crowds.

San Clemente finalists showed up in force on Sunday, including San Clemente resident Cole Houshmand who won the Boy's Open Title, as well as awarded a finalist in the NSSA Airshow.

Other San Clemente finalists were Max Beach, Kei Kobayashi, Dane Matson, Kirra Pinkerton, and Jett Shilling. Caroline Marks, a relocated Florida surfer now hanging her hat in San Clemente, won the women's title.

Leah Thompson, a female surfer from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina was named Rookie of the Year, winning the award named for the Hawaiian surfer, Carissa Moore. Thompson finished fourth in her final behind Caroline Marks of San Juan Capistrano, Kirra Pinkerton from San Clemente and Tiare Thompson from La Jolla.


Other open division winners included Brisa Hennessy of Hawaii, Jake Marshall of Encinitas, Nick Marshall, and Levi Slawson of Encinitas, as well as Tenshi Iwami, of Chiba, Japan who now lives in California. New Jersey's Spencer Bridges rounded out the winners circle.
