2 Men Arrested For Smash-And-Grab On Asian Woman's Car

The victim was in the car when thieves hit. Police caught the suspects after a similar crime, thanks to a description by the first victim

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Two 19-year-old men were arrested in San Leandro on suspicion of robbery and burglary. Kevon Mitchel, of Oakley, and Devonyae McClay, of Antioch were booked on suspicion of robbery, burglary, eluding officers, and weapons charges. Police also recovered a gun and a 32 round magazine.

On March 18, San Leandro Police responded to a robbery in a bank parking lot in the 1900 block of Marina Boulevard. An Asian woman told police that a Black man smashed her vehicle window and stole her purse while she was in the car. She gave police a description of the getaway vehicle, including the license plate.

Detectives obtained a search warrant on the getaway vehicle.

They also increased patrols at shopping centers and banks using both marked and covert cars.

On April 5, Detectives in an unmarked vehicle spotted the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of another bank, in the 1300 block of Fairmont Drive. They watched a suspect burglarize a parked car in the bank lot.

San Leandro Police patrol officers tried to stop the suspects, which led to a vehicle pursuit that ended about a mile away after the suspect vehicle became disabled.

“We deployed our officers in uniform and covert operations where there was a need and where their presence would help in capturing these suspects," said Lieutenant Ali Khan. "This case is an example of the hard work put in by the officers in capturing the suspects.”

The police department is continuing to deploy additional staff to suppress crimes.
