Dec. 21, 2020
It's going to take more than a global pandemic to prevent the Assumption School community from joining together to help the needy. Last week, the Assumption's St. Nick's Boutique "Spirit of Giving" Virtual Auction and succulent sale raised a record $8,600 for the Davis Street Hot Breakfast Program for Low-Income Preschoolers -- $3,000 more than last year.

For the past 20 years, the Assumption community has celebrated the spirit of giving by raising funds for the Davis Street Hot Breakfast Program for low-income preschoolers. And in this challenging year, Davis Street's services are needed more than ever.

With the majority of kids learning from home, the organizers of this annual fundraiser pivoted from their traditional fundraising model to attract donors with handmade Christmas trees made from delicate succulent plants and a virtual auction offering nearly 100 gift items. More than 60 gorgeous Christmas trees, personally created by Assumption parent Phuong Hathaway, were sold. Auction items offered in the St. Nick’s “Spirit of Giving” virtual auction were donated by members of the Assumption School and Parish community.

On December 4, members of Assumption’s Girl Scout troop helped to sort and fulfill orders for winning bidders who came to the school campus to pick up their succulents and auction items. Many relished in the opportunity to see other parents and students they had not seen in person for month.
Principal Lana Rocheford commends the work of lead organizers Phuong Hathaway and Allison Pretto, who under challenging circumstances this year had to reimagine how to carry out this important charity work. “Once again, the Assumption community never fails to deliver on meeting challenges to serve community needs. Our community truly loves giving to the Davis Street Family Resource Center each year. The succulent Christmas trees were a very popular commodity to include this year. I am not surprised that Assumption set a new record in our fundraising efforts. But, we know that all of this success would not have happened without the creativity and hours of dedicated work by our organizers.”
