Making this process gradual now may help prevent separation distress once stay at home restrictions ease. The East Bay SPCA is here to help with these tips to ease dogs into spending stretches of time home alone.

  • Provide enrichment items like a food puzzle or stuffed Kong when you leave and other times of the day, so they don’t begin to associate food with being left alone.
  • Leave the house a few times per day even for a few minutes and vary the time you leave them alone if they appear relaxed.
  • When leaving the house and returning home—be BORING! If your dog is anxiously waiting for an exciting reunion it can increase their stress level while alone.
