SAN LEANDRO, CA — Two suspects attacked and robbed an elderly Asian man as well as another victim in San Leandro on Saturday, but police said Tuesday there is no indication that the case was a hate crime.

The 80-year-old Asian victim was attacked around 4 p.m. while out for a walk in the 14200 block of Acapulco Road, where the suspects pushed him to the ground and demanded his wallet, according to police.

The suspects eventually removed the victim's Fitbit wristband by force and fled in a blue Subaru sedan. The victim reported minor injuries but did not require further medical attention, police said.

At about 5:45 p.m. the same day, two suspects robbed a 19-year-old Hispanic woman of her purse in the 500 block of Bancroft Avenue and matched the description from the earlier robbery of being black males between 16-19 years old who were about 5 feet 7 inches tall with thin builds and fled in a blue Subaru sedan with black and silver rims, police said.

San Leandro police said in a news release that a victim demographic study done in March found a 283 percent increase in violent crimes against Asian community members in the city in 2020 compared to 2019, although there is no indication that Saturday's victim was targeted due to his race.
