Mama Duck, Ducklings Rescued From Freeway: Photos

A California Highway Patrol officer found them stranded in the center divide and stopped freeway traffic to save the family.

EAST BAY AREA — The Oakland Office of the CHP is quacking with pride over a safe rescue last week. Officer Coffman escorted a mama duck and her ducklings off the freeway and safely relocated them to a park.

A call came into the CHP dispatch center that the duck family was stranded in the center divide of the freeway. Sure enough, Coffman and his beat partner Officer Witte found them huddled near a concrete divider.

All three lanes of traffic were stopped so mama could lead her little ones to the other side. Not content with that outcome, officers captured the baby ducklings and put them into a bag. "They then used the bag-o-ducklings as bait" to lead mama to safety in a nearby park, the CHP said in an online posting. "All is well for this traveling duck family."
