Train Derailment in San Leandro Affects Traffic [Updated]

A Union Pacific train derailed that at a low speed Friday morning in San Leandro will impact traffic in the area, officials said.

SAN LEANDRO, CA - A Union Pacific Railroad train derailed at low speed Friday morning in San Leandro and traffic will be affected until late Friday night or early Saturday morning, police and Alameda County Fire Department officials said.

The derailment of four cars of a six-car train was first reported at 10:25 a.m. at an intersection of the tracks with Williams Street, which is now closed in both directions.

"This was a minor incident," Union Pacific spokesman Jeff DeGraff said.

The train was on a spur or offshoot of the main line and taking pieces of plastic to a customer when the four cars went off the tracks.

It appears one or more broken rails caused the derailment, DeGraff said.

Since the train left the main line, neither other freight trains nor Amtrak passengers will be affected.

No one was injured and nothing spilled from the train.

The derailed cars remained upright and a Union Pacific contractor from Stockton is on its way to put them back on the tracks, according to DeGraff.

Then the tracks will be inspected to see whether the derailment caused damage, DeGraff said.

Police are asking people to avoid the 2100 block of Williams Street between Merced Street and Doolittle Drive because repairs will be made to the tracks until roughly 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police suggest drivers use either Davis Street or Marina Boulevard.
