Pink Supermoon Over The Bay: CA Photo Of The Week

OAKLAND, CA — Patch reader Danny Wertheimer captured these amazing shots of the pink supermoon which graced Californians — and everyone else for that matter – on Monday night.
While the moon didn't actually appear pink in the night time sky on Monday night, it is the first of three "supermoons" (or full moons) that approach the Earth close to their nearest point in their monthly orbit. According to experts, supermoons can appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than full moons that are farthest from the Earth. They are typically 7 percent larger and 14 percent brighter than a normal moon.

According to earthsky.org, Monday's moon came within 222,212 miles of Earth and will be the closest of the next two supermoons, which will appear on May 26 (222,117 miles away) and June 24 (224,662 miles away)
