SAN LEANDRO, CA — A 16-year-old San Leandro girl was arrested Friday in Antioch in connection with an attempted carjacking of an elderly woman in a grocery store parking lot in San Francisco's Richmond District.

Police say the girl approached a 75-year-old woman in the 700 block of 7th Avenue at 4:58 p.m. Thursday, March 11, and asked to borrow the woman's mobile phone to call a family member.

When the woman handed her phone to the girl, two other suspects and the girl assaulted the woman and robbed her of her wallet and keys, police said.

The trio tried to drive off in the victim's car, but a bystander intervened and used his hand to hit the back window of the vehicle — shattering it upon impact — as the suspects backed it into him.

The suspects got out of the woman's vehicle, jumped in another vehicle, and fled the scene.

Both the victim and the bystander sustained non-life-threatening injuries and provided police with information about the getaway vehicle.

In addition, witnesses shared mobile phone recordings of the incident with responding officers, who put out a felony warrant for the vehicle.

Roughly 24 hours later — at 5:09 p.m. Friday — Antioch police spotted the vehicle in their city and detained its three occupants. One of them was identified as a suspect in the carjacking.

San Francisco police arrested a 16-year-old girl on suspicion of committing several felonies, including carjacking, robbery, aggravated assault, elder abuse, and conspiracy. Police transported her to San Francisco's Juvenile Justice Center.
