San Leandro Homicide Arrest

Police believe the San Leandro homicide involved rival gang members.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — An Oakland man has been arrested in connection with a San Leandro homicide in December, San Leandro police said Wednesday.

An arrest warrant was served Feb. 17 in Carmichael, where 28-year-old Wayvonte Oxner was arrested in connection with the death of 23-year-old Amari Mathews of Oakland, police said. A second person of interest was arrested on a parole violation in Sacramento.

Officers responding to the shooting report at 4:50 p.m. Dec. 14 in the in the 600 block of East 14th Street found Mathews with multiple wounds and provided him with medical aid, before he was taken to an area hospital. Mathews was later pronounced dead.

Oxner, who was located a block away about an hour later, admitted being at the shooting scene but told police he was a bystander.

"Detectives learned Oxner's vehicle was parked within the crime scene, and his car keys were located where the shooting occurred," police said.

Investigators determined through witness interviews and surveillance video that Oxner robbed Mathews before the shooting, police said, and concluded that the two men were members of rival Oakland gangs.

The investigation remains active and detectives are working to identify other subjects of interest, police said.
