San Leandro Man ID'd As Pedestrian Crash Victim

Investigators say the men was laying in the road when he was hit.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A man who apparently laid down on a road in San Leandro and was hit and killed by a vehicle late Thursday night has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 43-year-old James Mozon.

The collision occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 15300 block of Hesperian Boulevard. Mozon, a San Leandro resident, was taken to Eden Medical Center and died from his injuries early Friday.

Investigators said the driver of a 2001 Toyota was heading north on Hesperian and noticed someone lying in the roadway. The Toyota driver tried to swerve but ran him over, according to police.

San Leandro police Lt. Ted Henderson said, "We do not know why the pedestrian laid himself down in the roadway prior to this collision and we will not know if alcohol and or drugs were factors until the Alameda County coroner's office has completed their investigation."

The Toyota driver stopped and cooperated with police, and did not appear to be intoxicated.
