San Leandro Schools Close For 3 Weeks: Coronavirus

San Leandro Unified School District announced the closure on Friday.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Unified School District will close all schools from March 16 to April 6 in an effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19. The decision was announced on Friday.

District offices are expected to remain open during the closure to keep essential operations going and to communicate families.

During the closure, each school will receive a deep cleaning. Athletic fields and playground will also be off-limits, and the district encourages families to keep children at home in order for the closures to be effective.

A message to the community signed by Superintendent Michael McLaughlin said, "Children have not been shown to be a high-risk group for serious illness from this virus. However, they can transmit the virus to those most vulnerable and public health experts tell us that unless children stay in their homes away from other people for the duration of the closure, then they still run the risk of potential exposure."
