SLPD Plans Ticket Blitz Today On Drivers Who Text Or Talk

The San Leandro Police Department says officers will be on especially high alert for distracted drivers. Save yourself a ticket, and maybe a life.

 

Today would be an especially good day to obey state laws against talking and/or texting while driving.

It would also be wise not to put on makeup while looking in the rearview mirror, or bending over to fiddle with the car stereo.

San Leandro Police Department Lieutenant Mike Sobek gave Patch a heads up that officers will ticketing in force today as part of a stepped-up statewide enforcement drive in connection with Distracted Driving month.

Authorities say that, nationwide, 3,331 people died in accidents in 2011 where at least one driver was distracted.

In California, hundreds of people have been seriously injured or killed due to distracted driving. 

If those numbers don't impress you, here's one that might: the fine for a first time violation is $159, with subsequent tickets costing $279.

So live long and prosper by following these tips to avoid distraction:

  • Turn off your phone and/or put it out of reach while driving
  • Adjust the controls and set your song playlist before you hit the road
  • Leave the eyeline and lip glass for later; you look much better alive.
