Two-Alarm Fire At Recycling Business Sends Smoke Over Oakland

Oakland residents likely smelled smoke early Saturday as firefighters finished putting out a two-alarm blaze on San Leandro Street.

OAKLAND, CA — East Oakland residents likely smelled smoke in the air early Saturday as firefighters finished putting out a two-alarm blaze on San Leandro Street late Friday evening, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 9:16 p.m. at Worldwide Green Resource, a recycler, at 9315 San Leandro St., fire department Chief of Staff Michael Hunt said.

By 10:45 p.m., firefighters had contained the fire, but it was not under control. Rail traffic was still stopped in both directions as of 11:30 p.m.

No other structures were damaged, and no one was injured, Hunt said. A fire investigator was reviewing video surveillance to try to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Neither was known to fire officials as of late Friday night.
