Woman Killed In San Leandro Crash ID'd

The force of the crash ripped off the car door and she was thrown to the pavement.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A woman who was killed in a collision between a speeding car and a big-rig on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro on Tuesday morning was identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau on Thursday as 20-year-old Karen Perez of Oakland.

Perez was a passenger in a 2000 Honda Accord being driven by a 20-year-old Oakland man that collided with a 2015 Freightliner truck being driven by a 35-year-old man from Atwater in Merced County at about 10:55 a.m. Tuesday on southbound Highway 880 in the area of Floresta Boulevard,
California Highway Patrol Officer Manuel Leal said.

Leal said witnesses told officers that the Oakland man was making several unsafe lane changes in the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes at a high rate of speed and, for an unknown reason, the car lost control and crossed from the No. 1 lane to the No. 5 lane, where it collided with the big-rig.

The collision caused the Accord's right front passenger door to be torn off and Perez was ejected, according to Leal.

He said Alameda County firefighters responded and attempted to provide medical aid to Perez but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 20-year-old driver of the Accord was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley to be treated for a complaint of pain. The big-rig driver, a 35-year-old man from Atwater in Merced County, didn't suffer any injuries, according to Leal.

The three right southbound lanes of Highway 880 were closed for about three hours after the collision.

Leal said Thursday that the CHP is still investigating the fatal collision and no arrests have been made so far.
