Los Angeles Rams "A Crucial Catch" Go Pink
Sunday, October 9 the Los Angeles Rams celebrated their annual Breast Cancer Awareness "A Crucial Catch" game!
The Rams hosted a VIP tailgate and ultimate pampering experience for 50 women and men who have fought or are currently fighting breast cancer. Prior to the game this last Sunday at the L.A. Coliseum. During player introductions, the survivors and fighters form a “Survivor Tunnel” that the players run through as the team takes the field. Then all the survivors and fighters got seat at the South Peristyle Deck to watch the game, it's like sitting at the top of the world!
It was an amazing experience for me as one of the selected survivor. I'm a October born and it served a special meaning for me to celebrate my birthday with my older daughter, Stephanie beside me in the Rams's "A Crucial Catch" game. I still remember my world changed suddenly when during a routine mammogram and ultrasound examination, my physician discovered a tumor and start spreading into breast cancer. This revelation shook the entire family. Given the situation, I was quick to deny the reality of the situation, "Why me?" was all I could think about. I felt overwhelmed by the situation and began thinking about all the worst case scenarios. Rather than let the avalanche of negative emotions control me, I decided to take a step back and evaluate how to approach the situation. I reminded myself that I owed it to my family, to my children's future, to survive my personal fight against cancer. The thought of being absent from my children's life proved so much more terrifying than treatment.
I began to engage in active communication with my medical team to find the best options available for my treatment. Instead of bemoaning my situation and dwelling on the disease, I learned to adjust my mindset in a positive direction and turn the negative energy into motivation to get better. Accepting that the disease didn't need to be a tragic, but an opportunity to overcome adversity.

The general to this mental state did not occur instantaneously. There were many moments where I still struggled to come to terms with my diagnosis and the progression of my treatment. The changing point came when my older daughter, Stephanie came to me and said, "mommy, you need to save yourself first before you can be there to love us." The words of encouragement fill my heart with new found sense of direction and energized.
Even with a positive outlook and a strong will, cancer treatment and the road to recovery are still fraught with many challenges. Maintaining the sense of hope is the best defense against cancer.
