San Marino Man Plans to Peddle Across America For LLS
Steve Gilmore of San Marino commits to curing cancer with plans to ride his bike coast to coast for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Just before day break on June 10, 2017, 60 year old Steve Gilmore will be checking off an item on his bucket list that is sure to change his own life, and hopefully the lives of many others. The San Marino jewelry store owner will be embarking on an epic 3,059.8 mile bike ride that will take him from Santa Monica, CA to Rye Brook, NY. The journey, which he estimates will last approximately 27 days, is in an effort to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). His fundraising goal is $500,000.
Steve always enjoyed riding and having recognized how blessed he was in his life, decided he could use his bike for the purpose of inspiring others. After losing his sister, Gail and close friend, Clarence to cancer, he chose to ride for LLS. “LLS got me biking long distance. I couldn’t imagine cycling more than my usual 10 miles in the mountains, but then in 2003 I rode for LLS in Tahoe and in 2005, I did it as a tandem ride with my son,” Steve says. “Biking cross country entered my mind about 5 years ago. I just needed to find the right time.”
On day one, Steve is planning an “honorary” ride on a mountain bike given to him by Clarence. He will travel about 30 miles from Santa Monica to his jewelry shop in San Marino, where there will be a public send off celebration. Day two he’ll set off on his road bike with his 21 year old son for the first major leg to Palm Springs, about 131 miles. After that, he’ll average about 100 miles a day on his own, except for a friend following behind in a camper.

“Between riding there and driving back I’ll be gone about a month and a half,” Steve says. “I’m lucky that my wife will be able to run the store and my customers are very supportive. Physically I’m prepared. The hardest thing is going to be the mental challenge of being out there alone day after day.”
Help support and send Steve off in style at his public kick off event. Details below.
