USC Breast Cancer Specialist Dr.Nelson speak about her passion
"One in eight? Will YOU be the One" learn all about it at the USC Trojan Affiliates general meeting.

Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery, USC Keck School of Medicine, Marie E. Nelson, M.D. will speak on “One in eight? Will YOU be the One” to the USC Trojan Affiliates on Thursday, January 14, 2021 via Zoom. The meeting will begin with social time at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 7:00 p.m.
After receiving her undergraduate degree from Carleton College, Dr. Nelson completed her masters and medical degrees at the University of South Dakota. She did her residency training in General Surgery at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and completed her fellowship training in Breast Surgical Oncology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Nelson's clinical focus and expertise is in benign and malignant breast disease. She is experienced with advanced breast surgical techniques and seeks in her practice to combine the best evidence-based methods with best in patient-focused care. Dr. Nelson's research interests include the diagnostic role of breast imaging techniques and the complex nature of decision-making in breast cancer care.
Dr. Nelson has always had a compelling desire to help people. She stated that as a young child, in and out of the hospital, with asthma attacks she gained great respect for the competence and compassion of the doctors who cared for her. She finds it a great privilege to be practicing surgery at a time in which breast cancer, in most cases, is a curable disease and she is able to bring resolution for so many of her patients.

She and her husband, also a USC faculty member, have a daughter and a son and she lives for time with her family sharing favorite moments eating dinner together and talking about their days. Spending time with extended family is also of great importance to her.
USC Trojan Affiliates, a women’s organization located in the San Gabriel Valley, supports the University of Southern California and welcomes all interested women to attend its meetings and events. All women parents, alumni, and friends of USC are encouraged to attend. Gentleman, are of course, welcome to attend the meeting as well. The group usually meets five times a year at various homes and locations within the San Gabriel Valley and hosts additional social and cultural events while raising needed scholarship funds for USC students. It currently supports ten students who attended local San Gabriel Valley high schools. The application deadline is February 1, 2021 and additional information is available via email at scholarships@alumnicenter.usc.edu.

USC Trojan Affiliates is in its fifth year of contributing money to its first scholarship endowment fund of $100,000, (now well over the initial funded amount) using these dollars to support its scholars. Money is also raised from selling unique USC products --- jewelry, scarves, clothing, tablecloths, towels, handmade signs, and more. Their newest product item is a custom designed scarf by USC Alumna and famed artist, Gayle Garner Roski . Members also volunteer at the Pasadena Showcase House to earn funds and participate in the USC SCupper, USC Day of SCervice, USC Homecoming, and Swim With Mike, and other programs to support the University and its students.
