Cigarettes Spark Fire Inside San Rafael Home
A fire sparked by discarded cigarettes in dry bamboo scorched a home Friday morning in San Rafael, fire officials said.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — A fire sparked by discarded cigarettes in dry bamboo scorched a home Friday morning in San Rafael, fire officials said.
Crews responded to the blaze about 9:10 a.m. at 410 Mission Ave., where they found an elevated deck and nearby bamboo on fire. Several residents of the multi-unit complex were in the street when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters were able to position themselves between the deck and dwelling and stop the blaze from damaging the interior of the home. Part of an exterior wall was burned and a window broken due to the extreme heat.

Damage was estimated at $25,000, according to the San Rafael Fire Department.
The fire was under control in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported and no residents were displaced.

Cigarettes left in dry bamboo was determined to be the cause. Four engines, a ladder truck, rescue ambulance, and three chief officers responded to the blaze.
