'Clean Cut Bandit' Tied to North Bay Bank Heist

A 48-year-old man dubbed the “Clean Cut Bandit” who was arrested last Friday for allegedly robbing several banks in San Francisco and Antioch has also been tied to the robbery of a Bank of Marin bank in San Rafael earlier last week, San Rafael police and FBI officials said.

Darius Gilbert was arrested Friday at a hotel in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles, according to the FBI. Gilbert is suspected of robbing the Bank of Marin at 1101 Fourth St. around 10:40 a.m. on June 2, San Rafael police Lt. Raffaello Pata said.

FBI special agents identified Gilbert from a photo taken inside the bank, Pata said. Gilbert is suspected of at least seven other bank robberies in San Francisco and Antioch over the last two months, FBI officials said.

In many of the robberies, he wore short-sleeved polo shirts and aviator sunglasses. He was armed with a knife in some robberies and showed a handgun in at least one of the heists, FBI officials said. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco is prosecuting Gilbert, according to the FBI.
