Strong rip currents and large and dangerous breaking waves along the coastline prompted the NWS to issue a high surf advisory.
NORTH BAY, CA — Strong rip currents and large breaking waves are expected along the North Bay coastline, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory.
The high surf advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday along the coastline from Sonoma County southward through Monterey County, including Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County.
"Large breaking waves will generate hazardous conditions on area beaches," weather officials said.

"The surf zone will be dangerous due to strong currents and powerful breaking waves. This
threat will be maximized on steeply sloped beaches. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore."
Breaking waves up to 20 to 25 feet are expected, according to the NWS. Breaking waves may exceed 25 feet in some locations.
