Marin Co. Supervisors To Consider Quiet Zones Along Train Line

The Marin County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to consider a plan to silence train horns along the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The Marin County Board of Supervisors will consider a plan to silence train horns at four crossings along the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit line.

The board meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, to consider a plan to silence train horns at Miramonte-Burdell, Redwood Landfill, Hunting Lodge and Neil's Island along the SMART train line.
Trains run through both Marin and Sonoma counties and both jurisdictions help oversee operations.

Under federal regulations, communities have the option to establish "quiet zones," where train horns are not routinely sounded at public and private grade crossings, except in the case of an emergency.

There are already several quiet zones already along the 43 miles of the SMART train line, but there are areas where residents say horn silencing is needed.

If approved by the board of supervisors, the agreement will allow Sonoma County to take the lead on establishing the new quiets zones in the four spots in Marin County.
