Marin County Whole Foods Markets Give $16,750 To ExtraFood.Org

Gift will accelerate ExtraFood's work to help end hunger in Marin

On July 26, 2018, the four Whole Foods Markets in Marin County each gave 5% of their sales – a total gift of over $16,750 – to ExtraFood.org, the only nonprofit that picks up excess fresh food from any Marin business or school and immediately delivers the food for people in need. With more than 49,000 people in the county worrying about where their next meal will come from, this gift will advance ExtraFood’s mission to help end hunger and wasted food in Marin.

ExtraFood’s county-wide food recovery program picks up excess food from grocery stores such as Whole Foods Market, caterers, restaurants, schools, farmers’ markets and other commercial organizations and delivers to nonprofits serving Marin’s most vulnerable children, adults, and families.

Since its founding four years ago, ExtraFood has delivered 2,000,000 pounds of food from 200+ donors to 111 sites in Marin, such as senior housing centers, homeless shelters, and after-school programs. ExtraFood currently reaches more than 7,000 people each month with healthy, fresh food.

Marv Zauderer, Founder and Chairman of ExtraFood, said, “We are so grateful to Whole Foods Market, and its shoppers at the Novato, San Rafael and two Mill Valley locations, for choosing to support ExtraFood. Every dollar we receive helps us recover and deliver more food for more people in need in our community.”

Colin Davidson, Store Team Leader for Whole Foods Market’s Mill Valley Blithedale location added, “Whole Foods Market’s Store Giving Program is dedicated to helping nonprofit organizations that address community issues, such as hunger. One in five Marin residents struggle with hunger, yet 40% of all food is wasted from farm to fork. We are delighted to support ExtraFood, which bridges the gap between abundance and need and delivers fresh food 365 days a year for the most vulnerable people in the county. “
