'Outside The Lines​' Exhibit Opens Inside Marin Gallery Windows

"Outside the Lines" features art from the San Rafael organization's "Arts Unite Us" program, which serves students with disabilities.​​

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Youth in Arts in Marin County launched a new arts exhibition Friday that viewers can enjoy while socially distanced amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Outside the Lines: Collaborative Art from Special Day Classrooms" is on display in the front windows of the Youth in Arts Gallery in San Rafael so people can see the show from the sidewalk. Artwork will also be available on the arts education organization's social media platforms.

The artwork was created in the spring by kindergarten through 12th grade students with disabilities.

"Despite school closures in early March, Youth in Arts was able to work with students through our Arts Unite Us residency program serving Special Day Classrooms thanks to thecoordination and support of teachers, paraeducators, the Marin County Office of Education,the VSA Kennedy Center, students, and all of our students' families," Youth in ArtsProgram Director Kelsey Rieger said.

"This year, the Outside the Lines exhibition has extra special meaning because it gives us the chance to celebrate what that coming together over the last few months has looked like," she added. "We can't wait to share it with the community."

The exhibit, which closes Oct. 2, features self portraits, collages and collaborative work, as well as a digital screening of paintings and sculptures from classrooms across Marin that are not included in the window display.

The gallery at 917 C St. in San Rafael is devoted to showcasing children's art. The inside of the gallery is temporarily closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
