Plane Slides Off Runway at San Rafael Airport

A 56-year-old San Francisco man wasn’t injured Friday afternoon after his small plane slid off the runway while landing at the San Rafael airport. 

The man and a female passenger were returning from a flight to Petaluma.

The San Rafael Police received a call at 2:35 p.m. that a plane was down on the runway, according to San Rafael Police Spokesperson Margo Rohrbacher.

San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said San Rafael and Marinwood firefighters responded to the scene and found the two occupants “safely exciting the aircraft.”

The plane, a low-wing military trainer, had landed and traveled one-tenth of a mile down the runway before it veered to the side, Rohrbacher said. 

No one was injured in the incident and there were no fires reported, Rohrbacher said. 

The San Rafael Police also responded to the scene and have contacted the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board, who will take over the investigation of the crash, she said.

The man stores his plane at the San Rafael Airport, according to Rohrbacher.

The plane’s propeller and undercarriage was damaged, Gray said.

The runway was closed after the crash and crews were working Friday afternoon to remove the plane from the runway, according to Gray.
