Red Flag Warning, Land-Use Restrictions In Effect For Marin

This event has the potential to bring the strongest offshore winds to the area since the October 2017 North Bay fires, officials said.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — A red flag warning is in effect Wednesday in Marin County and much of the San Francisco Bay Area due to extreme weather and fire conditions.

The red flag warning will be in effect from 5 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Thursday for the East and North Bay hills and valleys, and from 5 p.m. Wednesday to noon Thursday for the Santa Cruz mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

This weather event has the potential to bring the strongest offshore winds to the area since the October 2017 North Bay fires, according to weather officials.

Strong offshore winds with gusts up to 55 miles per hour and low relative humidity ranging from 10 to 20 percent is expected in the region. The affected area includes both lower and higher terrain areas of Marin, Napa, Sonoma and East Bay counties.

Any fires that develop have the potential to spread rapidly, weather officials said.

A wind advisory is also in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 3 p.m. Thursday for the East and North Bay hills.

The following land-use restrictions are in effect for the Marin Municipal Water District, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Marin County Open Space District and the Point Reyes National Seashore during the red flag conditions:

  • Closures at Sky Oaks, Natalie Coffin Green Park (Ross), and Leo Cronin Parking Lot, MMWD
  • Mount Vision Road, Inverness (National Park Service)
  • All open burning and burn permits are suspended on public lands.
  • Closures to Mount Tamalpais State Park: Roads north of Panoramic Highway are closed to motor vehicle traffic on Pantoll Road and Ridgecrest Boulevard. All park use permits north of Panoramic Highway are suspended, including filming.
