San Rafael Readies For Third Street Project Work To Begin

Construction on the Third Street Rehabilitation Project​ is scheduled to begin this summer, city officials said.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A San Rafael transportation project that took years to develop is about to get underway.

Construction on the Third Street Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin this summer, city officials said.

The project will bring big changes to several areas, most notably, Third Street between Miracle Mile and Union Street.

The project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the city’s downtown corridor and improve safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The project includes replacement of the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD)'s and San Rafael Sanitation District (SRSD)'s aging infrastructure.

The project includes street resurfacing, curb ramps, sidewalks, raised intersections through the downtown core, storm drains, traffic signal upgrades, bulb-outs for improved pedestrian visibility, narrowing travel lanes, adding trees, and more.

The project also includes reconfiguring the roadway between West Street and Shaver Street to allow room for an eight-foot-wide Class IV cycle track on the south side of Second Street with a dedicated sidewalk for pedestrians.

Staff will provide an update on the project at Monday's City Council meeting.
