261-Acre Animal Sanctuary Slated For Land North Of Santa Cruz

BAY AREA, CA — Rescued animals will have a new home after the Peninsula Humane Society and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or PHS/SPCA, purchases a 261-acre plot of land in the La Honda area of unincorporated San Mateo County.

The land will become an animal sanctuary. It will provide a refuge for behaviorally challenged and medically fragile cats and dogs. The sanctuary will also provide housing and care for rabbits and farm animals that would otherwise have no place to go.

The sanctuary will provide a safe environment so that its residents can live a happy and satisfying life.

"We are incredibly excited to begin this next, new chapter in our long history of life-saving work for local animals," President Ken White said in a statement.

According to PHS/SPCA, donations made the new sanctuary possible. The next phases of design, construction and ongoing operations will be fully funded by donations.

Because of the extreme conditions animals in the sanctuary have already experienced, the sanctuary will not be open to the public. However, the organization plans to have live web cams in the sanctuary so the public can watch the sanctuary animals from home.
