Homeless Who Died In Santa Cruz Co. During 2019 Remembered

The memorials coincide with National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A ceremony to remember 58 homeless people who died in Santa Cruz County during 2019 was held Thursday morning in Harvey West Park. Meanwhile, homeless advocates will be holding another memorial Saturday to remember what they say were 84 unhoused people who died in the county during 2019.

Dozens of people gathered Thursday as community officials read the names of the deceased, loved ones spoke, and those in attendance were invited to visit nearby Evergreen Cemetery, where a permanent homeless memorial will be erected.

The ceremony was hosted by Housing Matters, the Santa Cruz County Homeless Persons Health Project and Encompass Community Services' River Street Shelter.
