Beach Hazards In Santa Cruz County All Day Friday

Sneaker waves and rip currents are possible at Santa Cruz County beaches. Officials issued the second beach hazards statement of the week.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Weather officials are again warning that beachgoers and swimmers use caution, as a larger, long-period swell train heads toward local waters Thursday, the National Weather Service said. The beach hazards notice is in place late 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday

Sneaker waves and rip currents are possible along the Pacific coastline, and could sweep swimmers, surfers and beachgoers out to sea, according to NWS. Santa Cruz County could see forerunner waves of 18 to 23 seconds from 3 to 7 feet, officials forecast.

The public is asked to stay off the rocks, which can prove deadly under beach hazard conditions, and remain out of the water or stay close to occupied lifeguard towers.

Anyone caught in a rip current should float and relax — not try to swim against the current — and swim parallel to the shoreline if possible, NWS said. If swimming is not possible, face the shore, and call or wave to get help.

Don't turn your back to the ocean, NWS said.
