Campaign for Capitola Mall Sports Complex
A grassroots effort to convince the owners of the mall that a multi-sport complex with a roller hockey rink would bring people to the mall.

Hello Scotts Valley!
If you haven't heard, the owners of the Capitola Mall, Merlone Geier Partners, are asking the community what would bring people to the mall. Since most shopping is done online, they are interested in what Santa Cruz County residents want in the mall. Our group believes a sports complex featuring a roller hockey rink is the answer.
Since 2009 when the Scotts Valley Sports Center closed, local hockey players either quit playing, or were forced to drive to Marina and San Jose to continue doing what they love. This is a long, dangerous drive, and often late at night. Their money is also leaving the community. We want to have a local rink to play on, allowing us to have a safer, shorter journey.

However, hockey is not the only use for this type of facility. The Scotts Valley rink hosted many community and charity events, including a very popular Oktoberfest fundraiser. There was indoor soccer every week, Zumba classes, kids summer camps, and much more. Other uses include lacrosse, public skate & birthday parties, roller derby, basketball, etc. For how active this community is, the versatility of this type of building is sorely lacking in the county.
The camaraderie that such a place offers is incredible. All ages, all demographics enjoy participating in the activities they love together. A cafe rink-side with some TV's to watch local sports keeps everyone chatting and enjoying themselves for hours.
If you believe that a multi-sport complex that features a roller hockey rink would be a great fit, there is an easy way to help. Sign our petition, like our facebook page, and spread the word. The more excitement Merlone Geier Partners see about this plan, the greater chance we have for success. We hope this can be a win-win for the community and for the mall!
