Extreme Threat of Wildland Fires

Every year, multiple fires are started by fireworks in the City. This year the risk of a fire spreading and causing the loss of life and property is higher than ever. “Don’t be the reason for the next CZU fire,” said Fire Chief Jason Hajduk.

Fireworks are illegal in the City and County of Santa Cruz, including the possession, discharge, or sale of all fireworks, including those marked “safe and sane.” Additionally, there are no fireworks shows in the City and County of Santa Cruz.

Illegal Food Vending

Illegal vending is on the rise in Santa Cruz and a serious public health hazard to visitors and residents alike. Not all food vendors are playing by the rules, which means eating their food could make you sick. All licensed vendors must display a permit and their contact information. Report illegal vendors to County Environmental Health at (831) 454-2022.

Threats to Our National Marine Sanctuary

Santa Cruz is proud to be the home of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. But this honor comes with significant responsibilities. Sanctuary waters provide a secure habitat for species close to extinction and serve as natural classrooms and laboratories for schoolchildren and researchers.

Like food vending, Santa Cruz has experienced a significant increase in vendors on our beaches, which is illegal. Please do your part to mitigate this threat to our treasured, shared resource by not patronizing vendors on our shores. Also, be mindful to pack your trash – take out anything you bring in to ensure our beaches stay safe and clean for people and animals alike.

Enforcement: Safety Enhancement Zone

A citywide Safety Enhancement Zone will be in effect from 8 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2021 through 8 a.m. on Monday, July 5, 2021. The safety enhancement designation authorizes the tripling of fees for violations of the City’s municipal code, such as the discharge of fireworks, littering, and public consumption of alcohol.

Santa Cruz Police will be out in force on the days leading up to and on July 4 to ensure that community members and visitors enjoy a safe holiday experience. Every available officer will be proactively enforcing all violations designated for triple fines under the Safety Enhancement Zone.

Example triple fine violations include:

·       Fireworks possession
