Deer Spotted In Pacific Ocean With Sharks Near It: WATCH

A researcher spotted the deer when he was doing a shark survey earlier this month.

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- A researcher spotted a deer last week while he was doing a shark survey in the Pacific Ocean. In a YouTube video, Pelagic Shark Research Foundation researcher Sean Van Sommeran shows footage of the deer and notes that sharks are nearby.

"We're out doing the shark survey... seen a couple sharks and I've got a deer here off my bow that looks to be in trouble," Van Sommeran said in the video. "I'm trying not to freak him out."

Van Sommeran goes on to say the deer is "a good distance from shore" and seems to be "swimming around in circles."

The deer was swimming in the ocean while a nine-foot great white shark was nearby, the video said.

KSBW reported Van Sommeran used his "boat to help coax the deer to swim back to shore."
