Deputy Catches Puppy-Napper

The two-month-old shepherd mix was returned unharmed to the Santa Cruz SPCA.

A puppy called "Orphan Annie" swiped by a modern-day Cruella de Vil was rescued Sunday by a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy.

A woman went to the SPCA shelter on Chanticleer Avenue on Sunday afternoon and stole the pup, a 2-month-old shepherd mix, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The woman was later seen at Pet Pals in Soquel. Deputies were able to identify her as Christina Hawley and track her down, according to deputy Ryan Kennedy.

Deputy April Skalland found Hawley and the puppy. Hawley was cited for dog theft and the puppy was returned unharmed to the SPCA, Kennedy reported.

Orphan Annie and her brother, Oliver Twist, are both at the SPCA shelter. They each will be about 50 pounds when full-grown. Go here information about them or other adoptable dogs at the SPCA.
