Baroque Festival Concert

The Baroque Festival launches its 39th concert season Evolution! with Exotic Baroque (Concert I) featuring an eclectic assortment of ensembles playing the music of Vivaldi, Bach, and other baroque composers. Virtuoso Shoko Hikage leads the California Koto Ensemble in Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, rendering this beloved masterwork with a Japanese aesthetic. The chromatic marimba originates in Guatemala and was certainly not part of the soundscape of Bach's Thomaskirche, but percussionist William Winant and his Bach on Bars marimba ensemble will inspire us to wonder 'what if. . .?' Rounding off the evening with a group of more familiar sounds and sights is Mesut Özgen's recently formed Santa Cruz Guitar Orchestra playing favorites of J.S. Bach.

This concert takes place on February 11, 2012 at 7:30pm at the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall. Tickets can be purchased through the UCSC Ticket Office (www.santacruztickets.com, 831-459-2159) and the Civic Center Box Office. Ticket prices range between $3-23. A few words about the 2012 Season: We had a lot of fun exploring Endangered Musics in 2011 with one conceptual foot in the animal kingdom at several of our concerts. The coming season takes us from exploring extinction to looking at Evolution! Despite changes in leadership and finance baroque music did not go extinct in 1750. . . . What did baroque musical style evolve into? The Baroque Festival's Artistic Director Linda Burman-Hall seeks sought to answer this question this Spring of 2012 with a set of 5 concerts that illuminate the baroque family tree's reach into new territories.
