Fines To Triple In Santa Cruz During July 4 Crackdown
Police and firefighters will be in full force as part of the crackdown that includes tripling fines for many municipal code violations.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — The city of Santa Cruz is planning to triple some fines for lawbreakers during the July 4 holiday. Police and firefighters will be in full force as part of the crackdown that includes tripling fines for violations such as illegal fireworks; possession of open containers or consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places; graffiti; noise violations; trespassing; illegal conduct on public property; and urinating/defecating in public.
Police said the increased fines are a measure to help prevent crime and keep citizens safe during the holiday. Santa Cruz City Council approved what it calls a citywide Safety Enhancement Zone, which includes the tripling of fines between midnight July 4 and 3 a.m. July 5.
All fireworks, including those marked “Safe and Sane,” are illegal in the city of Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz Police Department is asking residents to call its nonemergency line, (831) 471-1131, to report illegal fireworks. "Our patrol teams will be busy, but we will respond to complaints of illegal fireworks," a SCPD statement read.

Officials are also asking residents to assist in identifying and signing complaints against people in possession of illegal fireworks. "We also ask that you be willing to testify in court, if necessary," the statement continued.
