Fire In Building At UC Santa Cruz Believed To Be An Accident

The blaze prompted evacuations Friday.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A fire in a science building at the University of California at Santa Cruz shut down the building Friday, but no one was injured, according to university officials. The fire, believed to be accidental, began in the fourth floor of the Earth and Marine Sciences Building at about 11 a.m.

Firefighters received reports of fire and smoke in the building's C-wing, and police officers began evacuations. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes. It was contained to a fourth-floor lab in the C Wing, but the building was closed until Saturday because of extensive water damage in the third and fourth floors from fire sprinklers.

"We appreciate the community's quick response and patience," UCSC Police Chief Nader Oweis said in a statement.
