Man Accused In 2009 Homicide Extradited To U.S.: SCPD

Police said investigators are still trying to find out how many suspects were involved in the stabbing.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A suspect in 2009 homicide in Santa Cruz has been booked into the county jail following his extradition to the U.S. from Mexico, police said Wednesday. Ivan Tapia, 32, is a suspect in the fatal stabbing of Tyler Tenorio at about 10 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2009, near the corner of Chestnut and Laurel streets in Santa Cruz.

Tapia was located and arrested by Mexican authorities with the help of the FBI. Tapia is being held without bail. Police said witnesses told them that Tenorio was in an argument with multiple suspects right before the stabbing.

Police said witnesses said Tenorio was walking along Laurel Street with a friend when the argument started. One of the suspects stabbed Tenorio in the chest multiple times.

Police said an off-duty lifeguard tried to save Tenorio's life but he was pronounced dead by medics at the scene. Investigators are still trying to find out how many suspects were involved in the stabbing.
