Santa Clara Man Killed In Santa Cruz County Crash ID'd

The 24-year-old man died at the scene; a 52-year-old man and 51-year-old woman from Santa Cruz suffered major injuries.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A man who died in a two-car crash on state Highway 1 in unincorporated Santa Cruz County on Sunday afternoon has been identified by the county sheriff's office as Mark Muonio, 24, of Santa Clara.

Muonio died and two other people suffered major injuries in the crash reported at 2:29 p.m. on Highway 1 north of the Scott Creek Bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Muonio was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse south on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the northbound lane, striking a 1974 Pontiac Firebird, CHP officials said.

Muonio, the lone occupant of the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The two people in the Pontiac, a 52-year-old man and 51-year-old woman from Santa Cruz, suffered major injuries, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
