Santa Cruz Co. Could See 30-Foot Waves Amid High Surf Advisory

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — National Weather Service officials have issued a high surf advisory in Santa Cruz County.

The advisory is in place until 11 p.m. Tuesday. Breaking waves of 18 to 24 feet were possible Monday morning at beaches facing west and northwest, while waves of 25 to 30 feet were possible Monday afternoon to Tuesday, according to NWS. Waves could be even taller "at favored breakpoints."

High surf brings an increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents, which could sweep swimmers, surfers and beachgoers out to sea, according to NWS.

The public is asked to stay off the rocks, which can prove deadly under beach hazard conditions, and remain out of the water or stay close to occupied lifeguard towers. Never turn your back to the ocean and keep a close eye on children and pets.

Anyone caught in a rip current should float and relax — not try to swim against the current — and swim parallel to the shoreline if possible, NWS said. If swimming is not possible, face the shore, and call or wave to get help.
