Santa Cruz Man Dies While Trying To Save Labradoodle

Randall "Randy" Henry Knox III and his dog, Sadie, drowned in the ocean, authorities said.

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- A longtime Santa Cruz resident died last week while trying to save his dog.

Randall “Randy” Henry Knox III, 71, apparently died last Wednesday after attempting to save his drowning dog, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

The golden labradoodle, Sadie, went into the ocean at Mitchell's Cove when she was caught in the waves. Knox went into the water after her but could not rescue her, the newspaper reported.

Rescuers pulled Knox from the water and transported him to a local hospital where he died, the Sentinel reported.

Knox's wife, Lynn, told the Sentinel that Sadie was a therapy dog who often visited the Hospice of Santa Cruz County.

The family lived in the region since 1973. Knox is survived by two children and three grandchildren, according to the newspaper.
