SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS, CA — The Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz (CZU) branch announced Tuesday night that the Basin Fire had been extinguished.

The Basin Fire was sparked Sunday and controlled as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters had to hike to the site of the fire and laid 5,000 feet of fire hose line, according to Cal Fire. Helicopters dropped water on the flames.

Big Basin was heavily damaged in last year's Cal Fire CZU August Lightning Complex Fire, which destroyed century-old buildings in California's first state park and scorched 97 percent of the park in a single day.
