21-Year-Old Assault With A Deadly Weapon Suspect Arrested

SANTA MONICA, CA — A 21-year-old man suspected of assault with a deadly weapon was arrested Sunday in Santa Monica, police said.

Officers responded Sunday at 1:13 a.m. to a liquor store in the 200 block of Bay Street, near Main Street, according to Lt. Rudy Flores of the Santa Monica Police Department. Officers talked to victims who were standing outside the store.

Blake Josephs Sheets, 21, and four other men approached the victims and attempted to talk to them about their vehicle, Flores said.

The victims refused to talk to Sheets and asked to be left alone. After a short argument, Sheets went to a black BMW with Texas license plates parked nearby and retrieved a loaded handgun.

"He returned to the victims and pointed the handgun directly at them," police said. "The suspect then joined up with his friends and fled in a separate vehicle."

It's unclear what the argument was about.

Officers found the vehicle nearby and the suspects were all detained. The victims identified Sheets as the person who pointed the gun at them, police said. Officers then found a loaded firearm in the BMW that was parked where the incident happened.

Sheets was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. The four other people in the argument were interviewed and released.

Sheets was held on a $30,000 bond. He was later released on bond and appeared at LAX Superior Court Tuesday.
