Traffic Advisory: Utility Work for Expo Starting on Colorado

Here is the latest construction notice from the Expo Construction Authority regarding the continuation of utility relocation activities along Colorado Avenue in the City of Santa Monica.

  • 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday                        
  • 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday

Where: Construction activities will be in the travel lanes on Colorado Avenue at various points between 2nd and 17th Streets.

Work Description:

Construction activities will include removing and relocating existing underground utilities at various points along Colorado Avenue between 2nd and 17th Streets. Major work activities will include saw-cutting and removal of asphalt, excavation of soil, installation of new utilities, backfilling and asphalt restoration. Night work will be scheduled intermittently at various intersections.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Eastbound and westbound traffic lanes on Colorado Avenue will be maintained during peak hours. However, left turns in this area may be restricted throughout the construction work area.
  • Various intersections will be closed intermittently during night hours and electronic message boards will be used to detour traffic as needed.
  • Access to various alleys off of Colorado Avenue will be restricted: traffic will be detoured to Broadway or Olympic Boulevard as needed. Impacted businesses will be notified directly.
  • Parking restrictions will be implemented and strictly enforced at all times and signage with specific restrictions will be in place in all construction areas.  
  • Electronic message boards, directional signage and/or flagmen will be used to safely direct vehicles and pedestrians around the construction zone.

Advisories:

  • To lessen traffic impacts, intersection closures and various other activities will be performed at night. Electronic message boards will be provided to advise the public when nighttime work is scheduled.
  • Local access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout all construction activities.
  • Noise levels will be monitored to ensure work performed is within the necessary compliance levels.
  • Please obey all posted construction signs and do not enter the construction work zone.
