City Manager Candidate Declines Job In Santa Monica

René Bobadilla will not serve as Santa Monica's next City Manager and instead will stay at the city of Montebello, officials announced.

SANTA MONICA, CA — The Santa Monica City Council announced Tuesday night that they selected René Bobadilla to serve as the City of Santa Monica's chief executive, however, Bobadilla declined the role, city officials announced Thursday.

"Today, my Council colleagues and I received a letter from René Bobadilla announcing that he will not move forward with contract negotiations to be Santa Monica’s next city manager," Mayor Sue Himmelrich said in a statement. "Mr. Bobadilla has made the decision to continue his public service with the City of Montebello."

"We will take up this matter at our next Council meeting and remain confident that we will hire an exceptional, energetic leader for our world-class organization," Himmelrich said

"We are thrilled to welcome John Jalili back to Santa Monica on June 25, 2021, to serve as our interim city manager," Himmelrich said.

Jalili will transition into the role soon and will officially hold the post upon Interim City Manager Lane Dilg's departure on June 24.
